National Doughnut Day started in 1938 as a fundraiser for The Salvation Army and to celebrate the women who served doughnuts to soldiers during World War I. In celebration of the "holiday," using data from Yelp, NewYorkUpstate has released its latest report of the municipalities that feature the best doughnuts north of Westchester and Rockland counties.
According to the report, factors that determine ranking include the number of reviews, star ranking and number of negative reviews. ”Best" is measured using an algorithm that looks at the number of reviews, star rating for a business, length of time a business has been opened, and other factors.
The number of negative (one or two-star) reviews are also a significant factor, and may give a restaurant with fewer total reviews a higher ranking than a restaurant with the same star rating and a higher number of reviews.
According to the report, these Hudson Valley doughnut shops are among the top 27 in upstate New York:
Glazed Over Donuts (first overall) on Main Street in Beacon
With an average of 4.5 stars over 198 reviews - including 156 5-star reviews - Glazed Over Donuts in Beacon topped the list of best doughnut shops in upstate New York.
According to their website, "we're a custom donut shop, offering fresh made donuts topped with glazes, assorted toppings and drizzles, all made to order. Once you fill out your menu and place your order you can watch your donut(s) being made fresh through the window into our kitchen. The donut machine is right next to the window so our visitors get to see the magic as it happens!"

The popular Orange County doughnut shop rounded out the list, with an average of 4.5 stars over a dozen reviews, including eight 5-star reviews.
"Stopped in for the first time today while in town and picked up a dozen assorted donuts that we selected," one Yelp reviewer wrote. "After reading the reviews here I was very interested in trying the Sour Cream donut and it did not disappoint!! The flavor and texture were delicious!!! The others were good as well. I like that the outsides of the donuts have a bit of crispiness to them. I will definitely be back! Especially because they were just pulling cinnamon buns and apple fritters from the back as we were leaving and they looked amazing!!!!"
